　　Twoquestions，then，werebroughtunderexamination；theoneaquestionoffact，theotheraquestionofright。
　　ThequestionoffactconsistedinascertainingwhetherM。
　　Arnauldwasguiltyofpresumption，forhavingassertedinhissecondletterthathehadcarefullyperusedthebookofJansenius，andthathehadnotdiscoveredthepropositionscondemnedbythelatepope；butthat，nevertheless，ashecondemnedthesepropositionswherevertheymightoccur，hecondemnedtheminJansenius，iftheywerereallycontainedinthatwork。
　　Thequestionherewas，ifhecould，withoutpresumption，entertainadoubtthatthesepropositionswereinJansenius，afterthebishopshaddeclaredthattheywere。
　　ThematterhavingbeenbroughtbeforetheSorbonne，seventy—onedoctorsundertookhisdefence，maintainingthattheonlyreplyhecouldpossiblygivetothedemandsmadeuponhiminsomanypublications，callingonhimtosayifheheldthatthesepropositionswereinthatbook，wasthathehadnotbeenabletofindthem，butthatiftheywereinthebook，hecondemnedtheminthebook。
　　Someevenwentastepfartherandprotestedthat，afterallthesearchtheyhadmadeintothebook，theyhadneverstumbleduponthesepropositions，andthattheyhad，onthecontrary，foundsentimentsentirelyatvariancewiththem。Theythenearnestlybeggedthat，ifanydoctorpresenthaddiscoveredthem，hewouldhavethegoodnesstopointthemout；addingthatwhatwassoeasycouldnotreasonablyberefused，asthiswouldbethesurestwaytosilencethewholeofthem，M。Arnauldincluded；butthisproposalhasbeenuniformlydeclined。Somuchfortheoneside。
