Itisasifacurtainhadbeendrawnfrombeforemyeyes,and,insteadofprospectsofeternallife,theabyssofaneveropengraveyawnedbeforeme.Canwesayofanythingthatitexistswhenallpassesaway,whentime,withthespeedofastorm,carriesallthingsonward,——andourtransitoryexistence,hurriedalongbythetorrent,iseitherswallowedupbythewavesordashedagainsttherocks?Thereisnotamomentbutpreysuponyou,——anduponallaroundyou,notamomentinwhichyoudonotyourselfbecomeadestroyer.Themostinnocentwalkdeprivesoflifethousandsofpoorinsects:onestepdestroysthefabricoftheindustriousant,andconvertsalittleworldintochaos.No:itisnotthegreatandrarecalamitiesoftheworld,thefloodswhichsweepawaywholevillages,theearthquakeswhichswallowupourtowns,thataffectme.Myheartiswastedbythethoughtofthatdestructivepowerwhichliesconcealedineverypartofuniversalnature.Naturehasformednothingthatdoesnotconsumeitself,andeveryobjectnearit:sothat,surroundedbyearthandair,andalltheactivepowers,Iwanderonmywaywithachingheart;andtheuniverseistomeafearfulmonster,foreverdevouringitsownoffspring.
